Professor Axel Schumacher,University of Wuppertal, Germany

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel Schumacher is the Mechanical Engineering and Safety Engineering Chair for Optimization of Mechanical Structures at University of Wuppertal. His main research is lightweight design, crash simulation and structural optimization (shape optimization, topology optimization).

Previously he has studied 1980-1983 as Machine Fitter at Deutsche Bahn, 1983-1987 basic studies of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Duisburg, 1987-1990 main studies of Mechanical Engineering at Aachen RWTH and 1990-1998 as Research Assistant at the Institute of Structural Mechanics & Control, University of Siegen. During that time: Dissertation (1995): Topology optimization of structures using hole positioning criteria In 1999-2002 Project Engineer and Project Leader for Optimization at Adam Opel AG (General Motors) and Teaching positions at the University of Siegen and the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 2003-2012 he was Professor at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Department of Automotive & Aircraft Engineering when he was author of the first edition of the book "Optimierung mechanischer Strukturen" (2005) Since 2013 he has been Professor at the University of Wuppertal, Chair for Optimization of Mechanical Structures.
